The Christian monastery, erected by St. Benedict of Norcia, is one of the oldest monasteries in Italy and is a daily destination for thousands of visitors and pilgrims from all over the world.
Montecassino Abbey represents one of the most important places of worship in Italy and is called the cradle of Western monasticism.
During its thousand-year history, the Abbey has been destroyed four times, and today’s structure was completely rebuilt after the war. It is inhabited by Benedictine monks and features an extensive library, rich archives, beautiful crypts, and of course the great basilica.
St. Benedict of Norcia is the founder of the Benedictine Order. On the mountaintop of Cassino, St. Benedict and his most devoted disciples built the first Abbey of Monte Cassino in 529 A.D. amid the ruins of an ancient pagan acropolis. Here he later wrote the famous Rule “Ora et Labora,” a humane and wise synthesis of the Gospel, in which the life of the monks is organized down to the smallest details. He was the first abbot of the monastery until his death around the mid-6th century.
